Keep Your Car Breathing Well: Change the Air Filters

You need clean air to breathe and so does your car, and a vehicle's air filters make that possible. The non-profit Car Care Council reminds car owners to have the engine and cabin air filters inspected and changed regularly to ensure vehicle longevity and interior comfort.

"Air filters are your vehicle's first line of defense against contaminants that reduce cabin air quality and negatively impact engine performance," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. "Community car care events held throughout the country reveal that nearly one out of five vehicles is in need of air filter replacement, so it's evident that motorists often overlook this simple, yet important service."

The vehicle's engine air filter traps dirt particles that can cause damage to engine cylinders, cylinder walls, pistons, piston rings and bearings, leading to the engine losing power. The air filter also plays a critical role in keeping pollutants from contaminating the airflow sensor on fuel-injected cars. A normal wear item that requires regular checks and replacement, air filters should be inspected at each oil change and replaced annually or when showing other signs of contamination.

The cabin air filter is responsible for cleaning the air entering the passenger compartment. Under normal circumstances, it helps trap pollen, bacteria, dust and exhaust gases that may find their way into a vehicle's heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, compromising interior air quality and damaging the system. Most cabin air filters are accessed through the panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or placed within the interior of the vehicle. A cabin air filter should not be cleaned and reinstalled. Instead, it should be replaced every 12,00 to 15,000 miles or per the owner's manual.

To help motorists "be car care aware," the Car Care Council has free tools available on its website, including a personalized service schedule, an 80-page Car Care Guide in English and Spanish, and a Car Care Minute video about cabin air filters.

I really can?t overstate how good this place is. I have a 2004 Tahoe and I am the original owner and it?s been a good reliable vehicle for the most part. I have had some good experiences generally at other shops but I came to Beiler's Auto on reputation alone. I can honestly say I am glad I did. Needless to say after 18 years that the truck is going to have to have some stuff fixed occasionally. So the first time I brought it to Beiler's Was for a power steering pump. They were able to fix the issue without needing to replace the pump. I had them do some preventative work at the same time. The total bill was less than I would?ve paid at a dealer just to replace the power steering pump. I had a couple electrical problems after that that they were able to quickly diagnose and get me back on the road while keeping my bill at a minimum. And most recently I needed a new starter which they replaced with a part with a 2 year warranty for about half of what I would?ve paid at the dealer. Basically the one thing I can say about Beilers Auto Repair is that you can trust them. That?s a rare thing nowadays.

Beiler's saved me 50% on my repair bills. Did not attempt to up sell. Had repairs done to my Lexus and Kia autos and the job was done on time and no bad surprises when picking up the car. Will use Beiler's from now on!!

Been doing business with them for over 25 years. Had a tire problem today, dropped off car in the AM for a actual Friday appointment. They had it fixed this afternoon verses Friday. Priced very reasonable. Best place in town. Had another issue today - a year after my last review - Have to say - They are the best place in town. Highly recommend!

Wow! I came here from an emergency recommendation and was blown away! I came in with no appointment on a busy day and the owner took the time out of his day to take a ride with me to try and figure out what was wrong with my car - as it was rattling and shaking very badly! The owner immediately figured out the issue and went straight to work on fixing the problem! He was professional, knowledgeable, and had a good sense of humor! I know I found my new car mechanic! Thank you!!!!
